Answers, not runaround

House calls, explained.

Questions families actually ask — answered like a doctor who has time to talk.

What is a house call doctor and how does it work in Calgary? +

A house call doctor is a licensed physician who comes to your home instead of having you come to a clinic. At Beyond Neighbours, we schedule an appointment at a time that works for you, and one of our physicians arrives at your door — stethoscope in hand, no waiting room required.

We conduct a full medical assessment, review your medications, order tests if needed, and coordinate any follow-up care, all from the comfort of your own home. It looks like a regular doctor's appointment. It just happens on your turf.

Does Alberta Health Care cover house calls? +

Yes. Physician house calls are an insured service under the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP). If you have a valid Alberta health card, you can access our physician visit services at no additional out-of-pocket cost.

Some supplementary services — like physiotherapy, occupational therapy, or nursing — may have separate fees. We're transparent about all of that before anything is scheduled. No surprises.

Do I need a referral for a house call doctor? +

No referral needed. You or a family member can contact us directly — just call (587) 327-1812 or email hello@beyondneighbours.com. We'll have a brief conversation, confirm we're a good fit, and get you scheduled.

No forms. No faxes to track down. Just a phone call.

How much do house calls cost in Calgary? +

Physician house calls are covered by Alberta Health Care for patients with a valid health card — you won't pay out of pocket for the medical visit itself.

Beyond Neighbours also charges a monthly clinic fee that covers care navigation, coordination between providers, forms, and patient and family education — services that aren't covered under the provincial schedule of medical benefits. Additional services like nursing, physiotherapy, or occupational therapy have their own fees.

We explain everything clearly before you commit. Visit our pricing page for details, or just call us — we'd rather explain it in person than have you decode a fee schedule.

What areas of Calgary do you serve? +

We serve Calgary and surrounding communities within a 25km radius of the city centre — including Cochrane, Airdrie, Okotoks, and Chestermere.

If you're not sure whether you're in our service area, just call. We'd rather tell you in 30 seconds than have you guess.

What happens during a physician house call visit? +

It looks a lot like a regular doctor's appointment — except you're in your favourite chair and the doctor came to you. Our physician will review your health history, conduct a physical assessment, discuss your concerns, and address any acute issues.

We can renew prescriptions, order lab work or imaging, and coordinate with specialists. We also take the time to actually talk with you and your family — which tends to get rushed out of clinic visits.

Is Beyond Neighbours home care or a medical clinic? +

We're a physician-led medical clinic — not a home care agency. Home care typically provides help with daily activities like bathing or meal preparation. We provide medical care: diagnosis, prescriptions, chronic disease management, medication reviews, and clinical oversight.

Think of us as your family doctor's office, except the office is wherever you are.

Can a house call doctor be my parent's primary care physician? +

Yes — we become your parent's family physician. Many of our patients don't have a family doctor, and we step into that role fully. We manage chronic conditions, do preventive care, handle acute concerns, coordinate specialist referrals, and provide continuity of care over time.

Your loved one gets a dedicated physician who knows their full history — without ever sitting in a waiting room.

My parent just left the hospital. Can you help with the transition home? +

This is one of the most important times to have a physician in your corner. Hospital discharge is a high-risk period — medications change, routines change, and the hospital follow-up system doesn't always catch people before they fall through the cracks.

We specialize in post-discharge care: reviewing discharge instructions, reconciling medications, assessing for early warning signs, and coordinating with the hospital team. Learn more about our hospital discharge support.

How does a house call compare to a walk-in clinic for senior care? +

We don't offer walk-in services — we only see patients who are part of our clinic. That's a deliberate choice.

Walk-in clinics serve a purpose for straightforward problems, but for seniors with mobility challenges, cognitive impairment, or complex conditions, they often mean exhausting travel, a rushed encounter with an unfamiliar physician, and a prescription without context. Our patients get unhurried visits in a familiar environment with physicians who know their full history and see them consistently over time. The care is simply better when there's a real relationship.

Can you help with medication management for an elderly parent at home? +

Yes — and this is an area where we add enormous value. Many seniors are on 8, 10, or 12 different medications, often prescribed by different doctors at different times. We do comprehensive medication reviews to identify interactions, unnecessary duplications, and medications that may actually be causing more harm than good.

Simplifying a medication regimen can dramatically improve quality of life — and reduce falls, confusion, and hospitalizations.

Is a house call doctor a good alternative to a nursing home in Calgary? +

We help seniors age in place longer — whether they're in their own home or in an assisted living facility. Our physicians optimize the medical resources and supports that make it possible to stay where you are, rather than moving to a higher level of care before it's truly necessary.

We coordinate with families, home care providers, and community supports to keep everything working together.

How do I get started with Beyond Neighbours? +

Call us at (587) 327-1812 or email hello@beyondneighbours.com. We'll have a brief conversation — no forms, no intake packages — just a real chat about your situation.

If we're a good fit, we'll get you scheduled. If we're not the right fit for some reason, we'll point you toward someone who is.

Can Beyond Neighbours help with end-of-life care at home? +

Yes. We have supported patients and families through end-of-life care so that people are able to die at home — surrounded by the people and things they love.

Our physicians provide palliative medical care: symptom management, comfort planning, and guidance for families — so that the final chapter happens with dignity, in a familiar place, on your terms.
